A strange affection

I care for her in a strange way -
Quite like the gorilla the kitten.
It cannot love, while he is smitten
With a thirst he does not understand.

She gives him nothing in return...
Unless you count the smug purr,
Lip-smacking of that ball of fur
As he cradles and nestles it.

So different the two in form and soul!
She can't care for him and that is flat,
What match is this - great ape and cat?!
Somehow no good can come of this.
